Auburn McCormick – Overdramatic

Song Review: Auburn McCormick – Overdramatic

Auburn McCormick is a fresh face to the country music scene. She hales from Mississippi but currently splits her time between Austin, TX and Nashville, TN.

She caught the musical bug at a young age, singing in church as a kid then, later, at the age of 15, picked up a guitar for the first time and fell in love with it. Fast forward to 2024, Auburn recently signed her first record deal with Rose and Thorn Records. Her musical aspirations led her to venture beyond her country roots and experiment with a new sound that integrates elements of modern-country with pop-country. She turned these elements into a brand new song that she released a few days ago. The song is called “overdramatic” and it is definitely a song to send to THAT ex that won’t get the hint. “Overdramatic” talks about a wild ex who craves constant attention and even seems to have narcissistic tendencies. Despite the toxic subject matter, her strength shines throughout the song. With lyrics that cut deep, it provides a snapshot of Auburn’s personal experiences, drawing inspiration from past relationships. The first lyric is “kinda funny how you call me crazy, when you’re the one stuck on me baby.” Auburn is able to flip the script and put the blame back on her ex.

Her powerful vocals intensify the emotional depth of the song. That emotional depth gets highlighted in several lyrics such as “Why are you so dramatic? Why can’t you just get past it? Fact is you’re just an addict.” These lyrics paint a rocky picture of the emotional damage she had to endure. The instrumentation of the song is the glue that holds it together. The piano is the shining star because it builds the tension of the song, almost like watching a movie. “Overdramatic” sets the tone for her future in country music.
