Everybody’s Got Their Nine Pound Hammer: Ashby Frank Delivers a Blazing Bluegrass Anthem

By Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

Ashby Frank is stepping back into the heart of bluegrass with his latest single, “Everybody’s Got Their Nine Pound Hammer,” a high-energy track that is a sharp contrast to his previous Dire Straits cover, “The Bug.” This new song, released by Mountain Home Music Company, is a powerful and concise meditation on the universal struggles of hard work and daily life.

Penned by three-time IBMA Songwriter of the Year Tim Stafford, along with Eric Gibson and Greg Cornett, the song draws on a foundational symbol in bluegrass music—the nine-pound hammer. This iconic image, famously featured in classics like “Nine Pound Hammer” and Ralph Stanley’s “Swinging A Nine Pound Hammer,” is used here to represent the burdens everyone carries, regardless of their profession.

Frank’s vocals are front and center as he powerfully delivers verses that tell the stories of a miner, a high-steel construction worker, and a firefighter. Each verse paints a vivid picture of demanding, high-stakes labor. The band, a stellar lineup of top-tier musicians, provides a relentless, driving rhythm that perfectly captures the song’s headlong rush.

The true magic of the track lies in its arrangement. The band, featuring Matt Menefee on banjo, Seth Taylor on guitar, Jim VanCleve on fiddle, Tony Creasman on percussion, and Travis Anderson on bass, doesn’t just play in the background. They surge forward with breathtaking, well-timed solos that punctuate the narrative, adding bursts of raw, instrumental energy. These moments of musical brilliance make the song’s taut two-minute runtime feel even more compact and exhilarating.

As Frank explains, the song’s appeal was immediate: “I was immediately drawn to ‘Everybody’s Got Their Nine Pound Hammer’ when my good friend, Tim Stafford, shared a work tape with me. I loved the way it focuses on the everyday struggles we all face, and it really has that traditional Bluegrass feel.”

The vocal harmonies from Tim Stafford and Kelsey Crews add a “high and lonesome” quality that grounds the song in timeless bluegrass tradition. This combination of powerful storytelling, dynamic instrumentation, and authentic vocal delivery makes “Everybody’s Got Their Nine Pound Hammer” a standout track. It’s a masterful piece of modern bluegrass that honors its roots while delivering a fresh, energetic performance.

Ashby Frank’s career has been marked by his versatility and collaborative spirit. Since moving to Nashville, the North Carolina native has become a go-to collaborator for many musicians. His recent successes include the IBMA award-winning instrumental “Knee Deep in Bluegrass,” and his impressive showing on Bluegrass Today’s Top 50 airplay chart for 2024, where three of his entries made the list. As a songwriter, he’s contributed to hits for artists like Junior Sisk and Dale Ann Bradley, and he’s even ventured into comedy with the Darrell Brothers. When not performing with his own band, Frank has been seen on stage with renowned acts such as Mountain Heart, John Cowan, and Steve Earle, showcasing his wide range and respected place in the music community.
