Annie and Terri Avery are a mother-in-law and a
daughter-in-law, and over the years they have together managed to do
some remarkable musical things in Iowa. Annie is the mover and shaker
behind the ‘jam sessions’ held in Dows, Iowa, with the help of Terri of
course, and that project has become very popular, not just with learning
musicians but with the audience as well. Both of these talented ladies
help us at our annual festival in LeMars, especially in the roll of
hosting workshops for those just beginning, to judging contests, to
hosting jam sessions all over the grounds. This CD is kind of what you
see is what you get, errrrr that should say what you hear is what you
get. It’s not a pretense, it’s just Annie and Terri on their respective
acoustic guitars, singing and playing songs they like. It could be a
back porch experience, or something happening in the local park
bandstand. But don’t sell these artists short. They just returned from
Hawaii where they did some pickin’ and grinnin’ and not just there,
they also performed at Yellowstone Park. They are also among the first
to ‘help-out’ in time of need. When we needed help raising money to fix
the roof of the Pioneer Music Museum, guess who was first in line?
This list of songs is pretty much what our older rural Iowan’s want to
hear, and Annie and Terri do a great job putting music right where they
want it. Their harmony is what really sells them, and what their fans
want to hear. For guitar they are both pretty much playing rhythm so
don’t expect any fancy leads, none there…BUT, this is a back porch
session. Don’t know who’s playing the bass, but it’s good. It’s a
great ‘sing-along’ CD for anyone to have on their back porch so they
could, of course….sing along. Neither artist has pursued ‘greatness’
or ‘fame’ in their pursuit of good old-time country music. For them
it’s a very nice ‘sharing’ experience. This CD sounds just like they
sound ‘live’ so you know it’s fun to listen to. I say keep it up,
you’re two of our best down-home performing artists in country music in
Iowa.
