Adrian Sutherland from the band Midnight Shine Interview by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio Show

Lamitschka:
Music has many new fans throughout Europe who may be hearing about you
for the first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you
play to someone who has never seen or heard you?

Answer:  My
band Midnight Shine mixes roots, classic and modern rock with touches
of our Indigenous language, Mushkegowuk Cree. We craft lyrics and
soundscapes designed to give audiences an impression of the remote
landscapes of Northern Canada, the places where we come from.

Lamitschka:  Do you write the songs yourself? Please tell us about the songs on your album (influences, etc).

Answer:  I
have written most of Midnight Shine’s songs myself, with the exception
of a few songs for which I had contributions from co-writers. Some of
the influences you hear in the music are Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen,
and Neil Young.

Lamitschka:
Your current single – Heart of Gold (cover) – what do you feel is
special about this song that makes people want to hear it?

Answer:  It’s clear that we captured something really special while recording Neil Young’s classic song Heart of Gold.
We put an indigenous spin on it with parts of the singing, and by
adding a third verse in our Native Tongue (Cree). It’s been growing in
popularity ever since it came out, and gaining new fans all the time –
pretty exciting to see the response to it.

Lamitschka:  What is your favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what’s the story behind it?

Answer: This is a tough question because I have more than one favourite song, but if I had to choose one it would be Leather Skin from
our third album. This song is about resilience, something that I’ve had
to have a lot of, growing up in Canada’s remote North.

Lamitschka:  Who inspires you musically and how deep do your musical roots run?

Answer:
Some of my early musical inspirations are Bryan Adams, Elvis Presley,
Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bob Dylan… Music has always been a big part of
my life. My family, all my uncles and relatives were musical, and
especially my mother, who inspired me the most.

Lamitschka:  What inspired you to become a songwriter?

Answer:
I started learning music at a young age, and after a while I got tired
of doing covers. So I started writing songs in my late teens and into my
20’s. Since then it’s continued to grow, and I spend a lot of time
today writing songs, and learning as much as I can about the songwriting
craft. I’ve begun working with co-writers, too, which is something
relatively new for me, and helping to expand my songwriting ability and
influences.

Lamitschka:  What drives you?

Answer:
I’m driven by Family, and Love, and my Culture. I’m also driven to want
to see how far and how many people I can reach with my music. I feel
like I was meant to do this, and that I was built for this.

Lamitschka:  What’s unique about you that will differentiate you from other artists?

Answer:
It’s hard to say what is unique about me. If I had to choose something
it would be my voice, and that my songs come with a message.

Lamitschka:  When you get time off, how do you like to relax?

Answer:
With the busy schedule I have these days, any time off is always spent
with my loved ones and going to back to the land to recharge and ground
myself.

Lamitschka:  What message would you like to send your European fans?

Answer:
That I want to keep sharing my music with the world, and also that I
have European Ancestry on my father’s side which I would like to learn
more about.

Lamitschka:  Describe what a perfect day is like for you.

Answer: Spending time on the land, with my family, and practicing my Cree heritage!
