In a powerful display of community and compassion, platinum-selling band Sister Hazel hosted their seventh annual Lyrics for Life – An Evening of Making Music Matter event on Saturday, March 8, 2025, in their hometown of Gainesville, Florida. The event, presented by Rich and Carissa Blaser, transcended the typical concert experience, becoming a beacon of hope and support for children battling cancer.

The night was a resounding success, raising over $800,000 for Lyrics for Life’s Camp Hazelnut, the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation, and STOP! Children’s Cancer in Gainesville. This remarkable achievement underscores the event’s growing impact and the unwavering dedication of Sister Hazel and their supporters to making a tangible difference in the lives of children facing cancer.

The evening was filled with unforgettable moments, including an intimate performance by Sister Hazel, whose heartfelt music resonated deeply with the audience. Special guest appearances by Rick Springfield and Edwin McCain added to the night’s magic, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Dr. William Slayton, a pediatric oncologist at the University of Florida and a crucial partner in the event, delivered a poignant message of hope. He shared groundbreaking research, made possible by past donations, that has nearly eliminated the type of cancer that claimed the life of Sister Hazel frontman Ken Block’s brother, Jeffrey. This research, which has identified the “fingerprints” of cancer, holds the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment across all types, offering a glimmer of hope for the future.

The event’s success was further amplified by the generous support of Verizon Business, the official After Party Sponsor, ensuring the celebration continued late into the night. This allowed attendees to further connect and celebrate the night’s achievements.

Since its inception, Lyrics for Life has raised over $5 million, a testament to the organization’s enduring commitment to supporting children’s cancer research and treatment. This includes significant contributions to STOP! Children’s Cancer in Gainesville and the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation, as well as critical funding for organizations like the Children’s Cancer Center in Tampa and Camp Sunshine in Atlanta.

The stark reality that more than 15,000 children under the age of 19 are diagnosed with cancer each year underscores the urgent need for continued support. While survival rates have improved, cancer remains a leading cause of death by disease among children. Lyrics for Life’s efforts are vital in bridging the gap and providing hope for these children and their families.

Sister Hazel, hailing from Gainesville, Florida, has long been known for their dedication to both their music and their community. Their 1997 hit “All for You” catapulted them to platinum status, and they have since carved a unique niche in the rock, alternative, and country genres. Beyond their musical achievements, the band has pioneered the themed cruise and destination event industry with “The Rock Boat” and regularly hosts fan-focused events like the “Hazelnut Hang” and “Camp Hazelnut.”

Their commitment to charitable causes, particularly through Lyrics for Life, further solidifies their impact beyond the music scene. Lyrics for Life, founded by Ken Block in memory of his brother Jeffrey, unites musicians and celebrities for concerts and auctions to support cancer research and patient care.

Camp Hazelnut, a key component of Lyrics for Life, provides a transformative experience for children and families navigating the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. Situated at Camp Crystal Lake outside Gainesville, the camp offers a safe and uplifting environment where campers can rediscover the joy of childhood. Sister Hazel actively participates in camp activities, creating lasting memories and fostering a sense of community.

The Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) Foundation, another beneficiary of Lyrics for Life’s efforts, provides crucial financial support to qualified cancer patients in Florida. By covering essential non-medical living expenses, the foundation allows patients to focus on their treatment and recovery.

The seventh annual Lyrics for Life event was more than just a fundraiser; it was a testament to the power of music, community, and compassion. Sister Hazel’s dedication to making a difference in the lives of children battling cancer is a shining example of how artists can use their platform to create positive change. The event’s success demonstrates the unwavering support of the community and the collective desire to bring hope and healing to those in need. As Lyrics for Life continues its mission, the impact of their efforts will undoubtedly resonate for years to come, bringing us closer to a future where childhood cancer is a thing of the past.
