Bret Mullins’ third disc is a real gem. Kiss the Girl is Bret’s’ most compelling work yet and shows a real maturation as an artist. Building on the two previous releases Bret has developed his unique approach vocally and chosen some well crafted songs to display his talents. Of the 10 songs on the album there is not a dud in the bunch although I am partial to Round Here, The Company I Keep and Freedom to Me. Bret Has found his niche in country music and put his stamp on these ten songs to create a really strong album. The first single Home Sweet Texas is a real barn burner and features some great lead guitar work by Michael Morales. It doesn’t say on the jacket but I am assuming Morales also provided the great slide work featured on this album. There is a mixture of the new and the old in Bret’s style featuring electric slide guitar and adding the excellent fiddle and steel work of Bobby Flores. Bret blends the very traditional with a hard rockin’ edge that should appeal to a broad audience especially in his home state of Texas.
