CD Review: Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver – Life Is A Story

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver -LIFE IS A STORY

The new project from Doyle Lawson &
Quicksilver adds to their amazing output of some 40 albums, and will be
welcomed by Bluegrass fans everywhere.
Aptly titled LIFE IS A STORY, the album presents twelve stories, some of
which are poignant and touching while others are witty and amusing.

“Little Girl” is certainly a touching story
of a child in a troubled family beset by drugs and alcohol, but this is one
little girl who finds redemption in the arms of a new, loving family.  “Kids These Days” takes a wry look at how
things aren’t like they were ‘back in the good old days’ but in a neat twist
suggests that today’s kids will say the same thing when they reminisce in their
old age.

Blue-collar life is the subject of “Life of
a Hard Workin’ Man” who gets up in the morning before the rooster starts to
crow. The uptempo track showcases the group’s musical expertise at its best, as
does “Derailed” that rockets along like a runaway train.

Among the standout tracks on this album is
“Guitar Case,” the melancholy story of a songwriter who feels his life has lost
its purpose. On a different note, Lawson puts his own stamp on the classic
Chuck Willis R&B song “What Am I Living For,” giving
it a fresh sound with a bluegrass waltz tempo.

This album follows their two previous
releases, IN SESSION and BURDEN BEARER, that both received Grammy nominations.
LIFE IS A STORY could well make it ‘three in a row’ for Doyle Lawson &
Quicksilver.
