Shelley Rae Speck Interview Part 2

by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine

Award-winning singer/songwriter Shelley Rae Speck and Dream Loud records recently released the first single from her upcoming untitled debut EP. “The Bottle’s On My Side,” a buzz single debuted in the Top Ten on Amazon Music’s Hot New Releases sales chart while receiving a warm welcome from Americana, Folk, Country, and Adult Contemporary audiences and the stations they listen to.

Lamitschka:  What kind of songs do you like to record the most?

Shelley Rae Speck:  I love songs that tell my side of the story.

Lamitschka:  What is your favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what’s the story behind it?

Shelley Rae Speck: The song is entitled Goodbye and the lyrics involve politics, moving on and reminiscing. It is built around a staccato bass riff.

Lamitschka:  How much creative control do you have over your music?

Shelley Rae Speck::  Great question. This is why I am so thrilled with this release. I have a great team like Dominic Friesen and otthers that are guiding me toward my dream. But ultimately I have the final say.

Lamitschka:  There’s a lot of work that goes into a number one hit. What did it take to make it in your case?

Shelley Rae Speck:: Rewrites. Rewrites. Rewrites.

Lamitschka:  Do you have any interesting stories about how fans have been affected by your music?

Shelley Rae Speck: I do. People tell me all the time how they relate to the story and that they especially love my vocals.

Lamitschka:  Who inspires you musically and how deep do your musical roots run?

Shelley Rae Speck: When I’m stuck, I read Shakespear for lyric ideas. Musically I am inspired by artists like Ed Sheeran, Haley Williams, Joni Mitchell. Joni said in an interview that she paints with words. I do that as well. I usually see an image of an event or situation and then the pieces fall into place. Lyrically, I try to be as accurate as possible to that original scence or image.

Lamitschka:  What do you think about today’s music scene versus its post and where do you see it going in the future?

Shelley Rae Speck: The current music scene is awesome! Flume is an amazing artist. As is Beyonce, Billie Eilish. Lil Nas X is a genius. I think the future holds even more Indie artists.

Lamitschka:  What do you think about today’s music industry?

Shelley Rae Speck: It seems pretty fresh to me. Lots of Indie music is more available than it’s ever been. Dont get me wrong, it’s still a BUSINESS but the new generation is in much more control of their own music.

Lamitschka:  If you had the chance to change something about the music industry, what would it be?

Shelley Rae Speck: I’d love to see streaming artists get proper Royalties.
