James Interview by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International
Magazine & Radio Show

Lamitschka:  Music has many new
fans throughout Europe who may be hearing about you for the first time. How
would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who has never
seen or heard you?

1)
I would describe my music as eclectic Americana with influences of
country western, southern gospel, Doo-wop, rock n’ roll, bluegrass, pop, and
folk that have melded together to make my music an interesting original
recipe.  My songs tell stories of human
interest and the melodies that carry them are always hand-in-hand with the
lyrics.

Lamitschka:  How did you choose
the title for the CD?  Is there a story behind the name?

2)
I chose the album title from the song “Nothing In Between”.  It seemed to be what my producer, Jim
Eannelli, and I were feeling when we made the album.  We wanted to be adventurous and have fun with
each song and yet not settle for anything less that what we dreamed. We gave it
our best in hope that others would enjoy and validate the work.

Lamitschka:  Please tell us about
the songs on your album (influences, etc).

3)
The first track – We Had to Meet
appears to be about the fate of two people meeting but it is larger than
that.  It is about life and death, fire
and rain, sea and land and the forces so powerful that they determine our fate
and make us who we are.  The second track
– X-Files (based on the TV series
X-files) is about all the mysterious things that happen in this life that can’t
be explained and about the storms that come our way that we find hard to
understand.  An Hour with You, Nothing In Between, and
Fallen Snow,
are romantic  ballads
with a tender touch of piano perfect for the story lines.  Lover
is a track that stands all by itself – with a big sound having a new wave
techno pop flavor.  Muscle Man – I call it a country reggae song with a little
humor.  Gotta Have a Love and In One Ear definitely have that down-home
country feel with a little bit a bluegrass.
This will make you feel like you’re on the front porch tappin’ your foot
with the neighbors.  Sound of Your Wheels and I
Wish You Well
tell stories of lost love but end on a congenial note.  All in all the twelve songs span more than a
few genres and we had a blast recording them.

Lamitschka:  What is your
favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what’s the story behind
it?

4)
Favorite song?  This is a question
I get asked quite often but is impossible to answer.  My songs are like my kids – you love them all
because they are a part of you.  It’s
like a snap shot of a particular feeling at a unique point in time.  Together they make a mosaic of the human
experience and it would be like missing a puzzle piece.  I value all the experiences I’ve had in my
life – good or bad – because they’ve made who I am and I’m at peace with who I
am today.

Lamitschka:  Who inspires you
musically and how deep do your musical roots run?

5)
My musical inspiration comes
firstly from my father.  When he was young he was a musician in the
church band – he could play every instrument in the band.  When he
joined the army, he played guitar around the campfire for the
soldiers.  He also wrote songs and taught me I could write a song
about anything.  I use to sing harmony with him as a duo for the
church.  My mom was also a singer and had quite a record
collection of the old time southern gospel quartets and she played her records
all the time.  My dad bought me my first guitar at 13 and taught me
my first chords.  After that it was only natural to start
writing songs.

Lamitschka:  Are you doing
anything to take music beyond its current borders or are you happy where it is?

6)
This is my fourth album of original songs and this is the first time I
have had someone promoting the album outside of the US.  I’m excited to reach a new audience and to
have fans in Europe.

Lamitschka:  What’s unique about
you that will differentiate you from other artists?

7)
I think the variety of my songs is unique.  You can’t say that any one song sounds like
the other.  I write the song for the song
itself no matter where it takes me.  I
don’t like being bound to any particular genre.
I also think that my honesty and clarity shine through in my music.  I’m not afraid to go to the deep end of the
pool on any topic covered in my songs yet I also like to add a little humor
here and there to lighten things up a bit.

Lamitschka:  Many music fans
today get their information about artists online. Do you have your own website
and what will fans find there?

8)
If anyone would like information about my music, I am on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PeggyJamesMusician/

Lamitschka:  What’s your favorite
song that you wish you could have recorded?

9)

In terms of a song I wish I could have
recorded by another artist, I would have to say “Heart of the Matter”
by Don Henley.  I have always loved the honesty and emotion in that
song.  In terms of my own songs, I wish I could have recorded some of
my earliest songs that have been lost.  It would have been fun
to revisit them but unfortunately I didn’t keep a record of them.

Lamitschka:  What message would
you like to send your European fans?

10)    I would like to say that I appreciate
everyone who listens to my music.  I hope
that it will bring you some happiness.  I
always enjoy feedback from my fans and would love to hear from you.
