I’ve reviewed a lot of country albums since I started doing
this reviewing thing as a service to International Country Music News
in Europe and Midwest Country in Iowa. I’ve reviewed a lot of country
singers from Iowa, and I believe I can truthfully say this CD is without
a doubt one of the best ‘classic’ country singers I’ve heard in Iowa.
Josh Daniels, a 26 year old Missourian, definitely has a ‘sincerity
sound’ that is hard to imitate, it just has to be part of a singers
being, part of his soul, part of his music selection. Josh has set his
sights on country music to share this incredible gift. I hope he never
goes to Nashville, they will obviously like everything he’s doing with
his voice, but unfortunately they will spend most of their time
transforming him into today’s ‘modern country’ sound which isn’t very
country at all, especially with the lack of fiddle or steel guitar.
Josh’s renditions of some very popular classic and traditional country
songs are just plain super. I’ve not heard it done so well here in the
upper Midwest. Not sure if he is doing this with ‘tracks’ but the
backing is just right for him regardless of what it is. Whoever put
this together for Josh had enough sense to keep his vocals out front
where they belong. It’s the sincerity of Josh’s relationship to the
songs that make this such a really nice listening experience. I can’t
share very much about this young artist, I don’t have an reference point
to go to. He doesn’t sound like George Jones on ‘He Stopped Loving Her
Today”, but the sadness of that song is very relevant in the voice and
ability of this young singer. Everything on this album is extremely
well done. I can even handle ‘tracks’ if the vocalist has the ability
to project his voice above the already pre-produced music backing.
That’s exactly what Josh Daniels is doing with this album, and he closes
this project with a very befitting song. “Murder on Music Row” a song
written by one of my friends, Larry Cordle who was at our LeMars
Festival two years ago. Josh takes this song to be his very own, and he
puts his voice stamp on it, and claims it for his own. I would have to
believe, that he believes this travesty today called country music
really isn’t that. We’ll see how long loyalty holds with this young
guy. Off this one goes, right away to the Rural Roots Music Commission
for their appraisal. We still have some time for CD of the Year
possibilities, and I certainly hope Josh finds his way to the hearts of
the Commission.
