It just never ceases to amaze me where good country music
is these days.  In the most unexpected places to say the least.  I
received this incredibly good classic country (with a little outlaw
thrown in just to make sure) from Hallur Joensen who lives on Faroe
Island.  I never got to go there during my own world-travels doing
traditional country music, but I did get to the Shetlands which is just a
bit north of where Hallur is from.  What’s simply amazing about this
CD, apart from the fact that Hallur might just be the leader of the pack
bringing country back, is its viability.  The first thing he did was to
bring in a powerhouse of studio musicians to do the backing, but then
he started bringing in his heroes and idols to sing along.  Yes, they
sing along on this remarkable piece of country music.  Kris
Kristofferson, Bobby Bare, Vince Gill, Charley Pride no less than
twice.  All four of these names are ones we have persistently tried to
get into America’s Country Music Hall of Fame, without success I might
add.  I talked to Hallur about this, and his first suggestion was he
would talk to Kris Kristofferson.  Oh my goodness, I hope he will talk
to the other three too.  At any rate, this is one incredible piece of
‘country’ music work coming from someone not a hillbilly from America.
The thing about Hallur is that his ‘country’ voice is right in there
with the friends he has singing along with him.  Many of the
acquaintances happened on his island during country music festivals with
these artists attending.  Needless to say, the backing musicians, as
well as the super star accomplices, are up to par on this wonderful
presentation. I couldn’t place any of the backing musicians, then I
discovered they live in the Faroe Islands too.  And the final mix was
done in Copenhagen.  How could a new CD be anymore international?  Some
of this material is usually done all by itself in another genre, but
somehow Hallur pulls it off.  On the song “Til A Tear Becomes A Rose”
written by Keith Whitley, Hallur uses mandolin, Dobro, and fiddle, and
makes it country.  On “Somewhere To Go” Bobby Bare sounds so close to
Hallur I had a hard time telling them apart.  And, on “Nobody Wins” Kris
Kristoffrson comes on with an acoustic guitar.  Hallur closes this
whole music party with a little honky-tonk…”Hello Josephine.”  Nothing
short of Jerry Lee could improve that.  I’m impressed.  This CD goes
directly to the Rural Roots Music Commission.  Hallur Joensen, M.P. G0TA
28, 700 Klaksvin, Faroe Island.
