The New York Times said recently that Dale Ann Bradley’s “Come Home Good Boy,” is an “affecting, quietly enraged song about sending a child off to war.” For Bradley, a 3-time Bluegrass Female Vocalist of the Year, it is a poignant and earnest prayer of a song for all of the loved ones and soldiers of any war, both past and present, inspired by a childhood memory tied to the Vietnam War. The video for the song, from her new album Somewhere South of Crazy, began as a collaboration with military families in Bradley’s Kentucky backyard at the Fort Campbell Base, and soon grew to include The Army Wives Network, Go Army Wives, and more.
Compass Records utilized social networking outlets to reach out across the country to obtain personal photos and remembrances – with a tremendous and moving response. Families of soldiers as far away as Seattle, WA sent thousands of photos, video and passionate stories of their children at war, some living, some recently deceased. Many of the photos were included in the final video, which became a tribute to those families and soldiers. The song is especially poignant during this time of national remembrance.
The performance footage featuring Bradley, Sierra Hull and Steve Gulley, was shot at Carnton Plantation in Franklin, TN, a historic home that served as an Army hospital during The Civil War. Produced by Compass Records and Veritas Media Group and directed by Joseph Spence, the song is a mother’s message to her young soldier son, wishing for his safe return home, “come home good boy/ you ain’t playing anymore/do the best that you can/to make it through real war.” Bradley’s last music video for “Don’t Turn Your Back” the title track from her last album, was chosen as a fan favorite on CMT Pure – beating out Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and Alan Jackson and hitting the #2 spot that July.
